Embolisation

A method for killing cancer cells or causing growth to a particular lobe of the liver. It involves blocking the hepatic artery to the area surrounding the tumour or supplying a liver lobe. It is done using angiography to place particles or coils (dependent upon whether permanent or temporary blockage is required) to the relevant area. This procedure is done under local anaesthetic and requires usually just a 1 night stay in hospital (in some instances it can be done as a day case). The risks associated with the procedure are infection and a reduction of liver function which would be seen immediately following the procedure and these aspects are constantly monitored.
