OUR TREATMENTS
Chemotherapy/Radiotherapy
Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy is the use of anti cancer drugs to destroy cancer cells. There are many different types of drug that can be used and it depends upon the location, type and spread of the cancer as to which will be used. The decision over chemotherapy is up to the HPB oncologist who works closely with the Surgeon and Physician in what is termed a Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT). All HPB cancers should be managed by an appropriate MDT to ensure minimum side effects and maximum effectiveness. Chemotherapy is used for two main reasons, firstly it is used in what is called an adjuvant way, which means it works alongside another therapy, for instance when you have had surgery or radiotherapy and there is a need to make sure that any cancer cells that are too small to be visible are killed. Secondly, it is used when a cure is not an option and it is then used to slow down the growth of the cancer or shrink it to relieve the symptoms it has caused. This is often used when there is jaundice occurring as a pancreatic, biliary or liver cancer is stopping bile flow. There are side effects with most chemotherapy drugs but due to the vast range of medications that are currently being used we would ask that you contact us for specific details.
Radiotherapy:
Radiotherapy is the use of x-rays and photon rays to cure cancer (also called radical radiotherapy) or relieve the symptoms that cancer has caused. It works by destroying the cancer cells within a specific area and can be given either outside of the body or internally. There are many different forms of radiotherapy and it is the decision of the Oncologist in discussion with the HPB team to decide which treatment is best. Due to the variety of treatments and side effects we would suggest that you contact www.cancerbacup.org.uk or call cancer support service on 020 77392280, freephone 08088001234 for further information.
